When your sins have been found out [i.e., discovered], after reflecting upon God’s holy law, you must arraign [i.e., bring] and accuse yourself, as it were, at the bar of God’s tribunal. Acknowledge your sins to be heinousness and mischievousness, according to their several aggravations.
First, Consider sin in its nature
Sin is a moral evil, an irregularity in the soul and actions, and enmity to God [who is] the Chief Good. It is the worst evil, even worse than the devil and Satan. Satan would not have been a devil except [for] sin.
Sin is worse than hell which is only the cause of sin. Hell, a place of torment is caused by sin, and is only contrary to the good of the creature, whereas sin itself is contrary to the good of the Creator.
Sin is such a distemper of the soul that the Scripture calls it wickedness of folly, even foolishness of madness (Eccl 7:25).
Secondly, Consider the source of sin in man
Sin is even from the devil himself (John 8:44 & Gen 3). He is the father of it; it came, and comes from, hell (Jas 3:15), and therefore [it] is earthly, sensual, devilish. Whenever you sin, you do the lusts of the devil.
Thirdly, Consider the nature of the law that sin violates
The Law is most perfect, most holy, just, and good (Rom 7:12; Gal 3:21; Rom 8:3). It would have given eternal life to the doers of it, had it not been for this cursed [thing] sin.
